It’s one mistake for Harry to harbor vile thoughts before his first cup of fresh-brewed Paquet Rouge; it’s another to call up Sam and invite her to the ballet.
Sam is a woman generous in spirit, and while ballet is not exactly her cup of tea—she saw the Joffre years ago as part of a college subscription series, and as far as she’s been able to tell since, once you’ve seen one emaciated young man in pink Spandex leap through space, you’ve seen them all—anything she can do to make Harry happy is fine with her. And he did seem awfully morose after the ball game. Besides, she’s always understood that the Kennedy Center puts on a great buffet.
And so, fortified by the lure of a substantial feast to come, Sam suffers gamely through an interminable performance of L’Après-midi d’un faune only to discover, in the crush of a thousand starving culture hounds, that there is, in fact, very little to eat.
