The idea of holding the wedding in Sam’s Rock Creek apartment goes by the board early on. It’s not nearly big enough, for one thing, not to mention the fact that the neighbors are barely speaking again after the unfortunate cessation of chocolate.
It is true, though, that rumors have been circulating for weeks in the laundry room that Harry can wield a mean rotisserie, and at the last minute, the elderly sisters in the penthouse offer to put up Harry’s younger sister and her two sets of preschool twins.
Offers of venue come in from all over town, from the Capitol rotunda to the Zen garden at the Florsheim, but Harry and Sam settle on the old Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo, a vine-covered manse in the middle of a vast amusement park, with whitewashed walls, charcoal tiles, and a polished dance floor so faithfully tended through the years you could be floating on air.
They were put on to it by Fabrice, whose cousin, a republican partisan in the Spanish Civil War, corresponded for years with a University of Maryland Hemingway specialist he met in hiding in a Basque farmhouse in 1939. Along with the gift of the hall, he gives our lovers a recipe for moussaka he carried in his breast pocket for the duration of the conflict.
